Barclays Bank is deeply involved in the deathly arms trade and funding of the genocide in Gaza:

“Barclays has ramped up its bankrolling of companies supplying arms to Israel by 55% since 2021 – despite Israel’s deepening apartheid and plausible genocide of the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip. Barclays now owns shares worth over £2 billion – and provides a further £6.1 billion in loans and underwriting – to nine companies supplying weapons and military technology to Israel”.

Barclays have also provided financial services to Israel’s leading arms firm, Elbit, which produces drones and other munitions for the Israeli military.

BARCLAYS IS BREAKING INTERNATIONAL LAW

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has issued 2 major rulings on Palestine, declaring that:

  • Israel’s attack on Gaza is a “plausible“ case of genocide.
  • Israel’s entire presence and conduct within the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT) is “unlawful”.

Both rulings come with clear instructions that no state or organisation should do anything that enables the genocide or violates Palestinian rights within the OPT.

Barclays is defying both of these rulings, in clear violation of international law, by:

  • financing the arms firms sending Israel the weaponry to slaughter the people of Gaza
  • perpetuating the illegal military assault on the West Bank
  • bombing other countries across the Middle East.

BARCLAYS BOARDROOM COMPLICITY

From its historical financing of apartheid South Africa to its current enabling of Israeli apartheid and genocide, Barclays is continuing its boardroom support for repressive regimes.

Barclays claim they are supporting the ‘defence sector’ and ‘national interests’. This is a wilful distortion of their activities and evasion of the bank’s legal responsibilities.

Amnesty International and other leading human rights groups are all clear that Israel is an apartheid state, and is conducting a genocide. All major UN agencies agree.

Why are Barclays directors failing to take account of these damning findings by ensuring that its operations are legally and ethically compliant?

The apartheid treatment and genocidal taking of Palestinian lives seems of far less concern to Barclays than the financial numbers on its profit sheets.

UK PROTECTING BARCLAYS

The International Criminal Court (ICC) has produced arrest warrants for Israel’s PM Netanyahu and Defence Minister Gallant. 

  • Why are Barclays still enabling their crimes?
  • Why is the UK, signatory to the Genocide Convention, ICJ and ICC, failing in its own international obligations to sanction Barclays?
  • Why are government resources being used to support Barclays rather than save Palestinian lives?
  • Why are state forces being used to protect Barclays while punishing those protesting their crimes?
  • Who do they serve, who do they protect?
