Statement on Anas Sarwar’s support for proscribing Palestine Action

The treachery and hypocrisy of Scottish Labour leader, Anas Sarwar, knows no bounds. His declaration of support for the UK Government’s plans to proscribe Palestine Action exposes him, yet again, as a failure to the Palestinian cause, and an effective accomplice to the genocide.

While multiple organisations – from Glasgow City Council to Amnesty International, 500 cultural figures and a list of top UN experts – have all openly condemned the proposed draconian ban by Keir Starmer, Sarwar’s statement will rank here in Scotland as another cowardly capitulation to his authoritarian leader in London.

It is the abject failure of Starmer and his government to halt arms to, and impose meaningful sanctions on, the genocidal regime that has seen the need for Palestine Action’s emergency measures.

Sarwar has attempted to cloak his attack on Palestine Action with words of support for ‘respectable’ pro-Palestine activity. But we are not fooled. For Gaza Genocide Emergency Committee and our wider movement, Sarwar’s feeble mitigations cannot shield him from the rightful opprobrium he will receive from all those who have actually marched, protested and acted in every possible way for 20 months to stop the genocide and resist this horror regime.

That Sarwar would choose to castigate the heroic activities of Palestine Action at this most existential time for the mass bombed and starving of Gaza shows him at his squirming worst.

We trust that this latest shameful act will not be forgotten come next year’s Scottish Election. Meanwhile, his presence should be duly rejected on every Palestinian supporting platform. Unlike the posturing Sarwar, we remain unqualified and resolute in backing Palestine Action.
